International Life Saving Federation

LSSM is a full member of the International Life Saving Federation (ILS). The ILS was formed on 24 February 1993 when the Fédération Internationale de Sauvetage Aquatique (FIS) and World Life Saving (WLS) were merged into a single, worldwide lifesaving organisation.

The ILS website has a useful library of downloadable documents related to lifesaving including articles (in PDF format) on topics such as Communicable Disease Avoidance for Lifeguards and Lifeguard Skin Cancer Protection

Handbook on Drowning - Prevention, Rescue, Treatment

This book is available from at USD160.98 (inclusive of shipping). This is the output of the World Congress on Drowning held in Amsterdam in 2002. Edited by a member of the ILS Medical Committee Dr Joost J.L.M. Bierens. This book is a must read for everyone involved in the prevention, treatment and resuscitation of drowning cases. It covers a broad number of topics including epidemiology of drowning, organisation of rescue in floods, diving and SCUBA, out of hospital and inhospital resuscitation, just to name a few topics.
